In continuation of the Zamfara state peace initiative implementation process, the state police command headed by Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Usman Nagoggo has so far recovered forty nine (49) rifles (model AK47) from the reformed bandits, and also one hundred (100) locally fabricated rifles from the militia group known as ”Yan Sakai”.
Briefing the press on Friday, at the command headquarters, Nagoggo said all the weapons were voluntarily surrendered by the ex-bandits and the opposing Yan Sakai militia group following the success of the peace dialogue between the authorities and the warring parties.
He disclosed that the first set of three AK-47 rifles were retrieved and submitted to his command by some repentant bandits who dared and encountered some defiant bandits and recovered the arms after killing them.
He said later, a larger consignment of assorted rifles were voluntarily handed over by the repenting bandits ”as a sign of complete acceptance of the peace agreement and submission to peace option for the state”, he stressed.
The CP gave the assurance that this achievement is just the beginning of disarmament process as according to him, ” more weapons are expected to be gradually surrendered until all forms of public discomfort on issues of security are finally cleared.”
The commissioner further explained that Zamfara state government has played a key role in having both sides of the warring parties to see reasons for the return of peace and resolve to start surrendering their weapons.
He recalled that the voluntary surrender of weapons by the reformed bandits was the result of building trust and confidence in the peace process which resulted in the unprecedented release of hundreds of captives by the bandits.
