The Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) Bauchi State Chapter, has urged the media as the fourth estate of the realm to give more attention to the plights of rape victims in the state.

Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim FOMWAN state Amira made the call on Wednesday 10th of June, 2020, at a media parley in Bauchi.

She said the association has embarked on community mobilisation and sensitisation on presenting rape with evidence across all the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

“We are sensitising communities and parents on presenting rape cases to authority.

“Media organisations should create awareness to the public on the physical and psychological effects of rape on the victim.

“For the culprits, there is need to conduct psychological assessments to identify the reasons behind this issue of rape.

“We have sexual and gender based violence in six local government areas of Gamawa, Misau, Warji, Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Ningi that we are currently running in court,” she said.

Ibrahim said that the association looked at the role of the media in educating the public on the contents of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP).

She said the association called on the media as the watchdog of the society to restore the cultural values that promoted the dignity of women.

While commending the members of the state house of assembly for the second reading of the bill, she noted that the association suggested stiffer penalties for culprits of sexual violence.
