Transparency: Declare your assets, Gov. Yahaya directs Gombe public officials

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state on Thursday directed all public officers in the state to declare their assets in line with the provision of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Yahaya gave the order in Gombe while declaring open a one-day workshop for public officials in the state.

He stated that his administration was committed to transparency and accountability in the conduct of government business in the state.

He said the need for transparency led to the establishment of bureau of public service reform in the state, bureau of public procurement, implementation of Treasury Single Account and the state’s steering committee on implementation of reforms.

“ Over the past one year, our administration has implemented policies aimed at reforming the public sector for better performance and improved service delivery,” he said.

The governor stated that the workshop was timely “ considering our administration’s commitment to reforming and strengthening the public service sector in Gombe state.”

He stated that the workshop would involve public officials across the three arms of government and would be conducted in phases starting with the executive arm.

Yahaya added that the need to instil the culture of honesty, transparency and accountability in the management of public institutions in Gombe state, led the state government to partnering with the CCB.

He, therefore, urged all officials to actively participate in the discussion and avail themselves with the regulation governing assets ownership and declaration for public servants.

He commended the CCB for the partnership in organising the workshop while expressing confidence that the workshop would add value to officials in Gombe state.

Speaking earlier, Prof. Isah Mohammed, the chairman of CCB, stated that his bureau has the mandate to give training in line with the political will of the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption.

Represented by Engr. Saad Abdullahi, Federal Commissioner, CCB, Northeast zone, Mohammed said information plays a major role in helping officials understand their functions in government and the need to abide by the codes of conduct.

“ The need for the application of punitive measures would be eliminated which will reduce the resources expended on prosecution of cases when functionaries of government are well aware and abide by the codes of conduct,” he said.

On his part, Asiwaju Olukanmi Ayokanmi, the Chief Executive Officer, Go-Getters Consulting Ltd commended the Gombe state Government, adding that human capital development was key to entrenching good governance.

He stated that Go-Getters Consulting is in partnership with CCB to organize sensitization programme nationwide for public officials.

“We are the go-between the CCB and the various state government that we are sensitizing and we are trying to enlighten public officials on their duties in relation to the code of conduct in the interest transparency and good governance.

Our correspondent reports that the workshop which is a partnership between the CCB and the Gombe state Government is with theme “ Strict Compliance with Assets Declaration and Code of Conduct for Public Officials.”
